A History of Help

For 160 years, our city's courageous firefighters have helped protect Houstonians and their property from the dangers and ravages of fire. From the early "bucket brigades" of volunteer firefighters to our modern professionals armed with fog nozzles, these spirited individuals have dedicated their careers - and sometimes their lives - to the service of others.

The Houston Firefighters' Relief and Retirement fund has a similar history of offering help to those who need it. Since our start in 1937, we've provided firefighters and their families with post-employment income in the event of retirement, disability or death.

Over the years, your Board of Trustees has worked hard to ensure that the provisions of the Plan meet the ever-changing needs of our firefighters. Here is the current Summary of Plan Benefits.
